Trail Rating System

This is the system used by Sedona Jeep Tours.

10Pavement; on-highway
21Dirt road; smooth and flat, with only occasional bumps
32-4Light 4x4; mostly level terrain with some obstacles over which the Jeep must climb; suitable only for high clearance vehicles.
45-7Moderate 4x4: varied terrain, with some inclines, bumps and obstacles; suitable only for high clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles.
58-10Rugged 4x4: challenging four-wheel drive terrain, steep inclines, large obstacles; suitable only for high clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles with experienced drivers.

Note: Trail ratings are highly subjective. A trail that is easy for an experienced driver with a highly modified vehicle may be impassable for a novice driver in a stock vehicle. Weather conditions may also significantly affect the difficulty of a trail. Also, the difficulty of a trail may change over time, as trail use, weather, and maintenance modify the trail. Always check with the managing organization and/or recent users before planning a trip on a trail and scout ahead on foot if you are not sure of current conditions.
